The PTA Meta dual OTP WhatsApp system is being introduced to strengthen account security in Pakistan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has partnered with Meta to deploy a dual One-Time Password mechanism to reduce incidents of WhatsApp hacking.
Under the new system, known as “Meta OTP,” users will automatically receive a second OTP three minutes after the first code. This added layer of verification aims to prevent fraudsters from permanently taking over accounts.
Authorities say scammers often use social engineering tactics to trick users into sharing their initial OTP. They may pose as courier representatives or customer service agents to gain trust.

If a user believes their first OTP was compromised, they can enter the second OTP to immediately regain control of their account. This feature provides a critical recovery window before hackers fully secure access.
Officials have reported a rise in the number of WhatsApp account takeovers across Pakistan. Once scammers gain access, they typically message the victim’s contacts and request money.

To counter this growing threat, PTA and Meta completed technical discussions to implement the dual OTP system. Pakistan will be the first country to introduce this feature. Meta is expected to expand the system to other regions later.
The initiative reflects efforts to improve digital security and protect users from online fraud.
