Defending champions Islamabad United made a commanding start to their HBL PSL X campaign with a clinical eight-wicket victory over Lahore Qalandars in Friday’s tournament opener at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
After electing to field first, Islamabad’s bowlers dismantled Lahore’s lineup, restricting them to 139 all out in 19.3 overs. West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder delivered a Player of the Match performance, claiming 4 wickets for just 26 runs, while skipper Shadab Khan contributed three crucial scalps. Lahore’s innings were salvaged by Abdullah Shafique’s fighting 66 off 38 balls, the only substantial contribution in an otherwise disappointing batting display.

Islamabad’s chase began shakily with Andries Gous departing early, but Sahibzada Farhan (25 off 24) and Colin Munro steadied the innings with a 55-run partnership. A dropped catch by Haris Rauf proved costly as Munro (59* off 42) and Agha Salman (41* off 34) guided their team home with 13 balls to spare in a display of controlled aggression.

The match featured several turning points:
- Lahore’s top-order collapse reduced them to 58/5
- Shafique and Sikandar Raza’s 35-run partnership offered temporary resistance
- Holder’s double strike in the 16th over crushed Lahore’s revival hopes
- Munro’s composed innings anchored Islamabad’s successful chase
This victory sets a strong tone for Islamabad’s title defence while raising questions about Lahore’s team composition, particularly their middle-order fragility. Both teams will analyze their performances as they prepare for their next fixtures in what promises to be a highly competitive PSL season.
