In an unusual escape, a prisoner named Muhammad Javed fled from Malir Jail in Karachi by manipulating the infrastructure of his confinement.
Javed, who was serving a sentence for a rape conviction in barrack number 5, managed to sever the bathroom window’s bars and fashioned a makeshift rope from bedsheets to climb over the prison walls.
Following Javed’s escape, law enforcement promptly initiated a thorough investigation, leading to the immediate detention of seven jail personnel from the Shah Latif area on charges of negligence and carelessness. The police have announced plans to register a case against these officers formally.
Further, the jail authorities have proposed legal action against the escaped prisoner and eight staff members who were on duty at the time of the incident. This recommendation underscores the serious breaches in security protocols at the facility.
This incident mirrors a similar escape that occurred in April 2022, where another prisoner under medical treatment at Services Hospital in Karachi managed to escape through a toilet window. The individual involved in that incident was being treated in ward 2 of the hospital and was facing charges related to drug trafficking.
These successive escapes highlight ongoing security challenges within Karachi’s correctional facilities and hospitals, prompting a review of security measures and enforcing stricter controls to prevent future occurrences.
