Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani expressed concern over the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to deny the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) its iconic ‘bat’ symbol.
Rabbani emphasized the importance of a fair and credible electoral process, suggesting that PTI should have been allotted its preferred symbol to ensure a level playing field for all parties, including PTI.
The ECP, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, ruled against PTI’s use of the ‘bat’ symbol following a petition that challenged the party’s internal elections as fraudulent. This decision is critical, as PTI faces a tight deadline to submit nomination papers and consider legal recourse against the ECP’s ruling. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Secretary General Ameerul Azeem labelled the decision as “victimization,” while PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon reflected on similar past challenges faced by PPP.
In contrast, PML-N leader Azam Nazeer Tarar pointed out that PTI was not the only party to have its election symbol withdrawn, emphasizing the authority and rules of the ECP.
The ECP’s decision has sparked a debate among political parties, with each expressing their views on the fairness and implications of this ruling. The situation highlights the complexities of Pakistan’s political environment, where election symbols hold significant meaning and the actions of the ECP can have far-reaching consequences on the legitimacy and perception of the electoral process.
