The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) reached an agreement on proposed constitutional amendments related to judicial reforms.
Key political figures, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, attended the session Jati Umra in Lahore, hosted at the Sharif family’s residence.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, alongside JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Bilawal Bhutto, announced the consensus to the press following the discussions. They revealed that the amendments aim to enhance the efficiency of the judicial system, promising swifter justice delivery.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized that while agreement on judicial reforms was achieved, efforts to align on other issues continue. The meeting also included presentations of three different drafts of the constitutional amendments, each proposed by the attending parties, with PPP’s Khursheed Shah discussing the parliament’s special committee recommendations.
The government plans to present these amendments in the National Assembly on Thursday, and PM Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to host a luncheon for coalition partners before the session.
This agreement builds on prior discussions, during which the JUI-F and PPP settled on a draft of constitutional amendments in Karachi. Maulana Fazlur Rehman praised the government for achieving a consensus under Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s leadership. However, the JUI-F rejected the government’s initial amendments as unacceptable, stressing the necessity for amendments that garner wide agreement and reflect a unified approach.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reiterated the intent to include PML-N in the consensus, highlighting that this foundational agreement between PPP and JUI-F could pave the way for broader negotiations and solutions addressing public concerns over individual or timely interests.
