Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan congratulated his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, on his reappointment as India’s premier.
Sharif expressed his felicitations via his X account: “Felicitations to @narendramodi on taking oath as the Prime Minister of India.”
Modi was inaugurated for a third consecutive term on Sunday, marking a historic moment as he equalled the record for most terms in office. The ceremony occurred at New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended by numerous dignitaries, regional leaders, Bollywood celebrities, and business tycoons.
Modi, now 73, has become the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to serve three straight terms. This term’s victory followed elections on June 1, where Modi garnered support from 14 regional parties within his National Democratic Alliance, a shift from the previous outright majorities.
This outcome was unexpected, as pre-election surveys and exit polls suggested a stronger BJP performance. However, this indicated challenges for Modi in maintaining policy certainty in the rapidly growing nation.
