Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar directed officials on Sunday to devise strategies within 48 hours to alleviate the public’s concerns over high electricity bills. He convened an urgent two-hour meeting to address these concerns.
Meeting Highlights
Energy and electricity ministry representatives attended, receiving a comprehensive overview of electricity transmission and pricing from the power ministry. PM Kakar emphasized that decisions would prioritize national interests and consumer relief without straining the national treasury.
Highlighting the disparity, Kakar said while the public struggled with costs, officials enjoyed tax-funded electricity. He demanded a list of those benefiting from free electricity. Kakar stressed reducing power expenses at official residences and even suggested turning off his air-conditioner. Discussions with provincial leaders about energy conservation and the July bill hikes will occur on Monday.
He urged power companies to strategize against electricity theft and present comprehensive reform plans for the sector.
The meeting saw attendance from federal ministers Shamshad Akhtar, Gohar Ejaz, Murtaza Solangi, Advisor Dr Waqar Masood, and other high-ranking officials.
Nationwide protests, triggered by soaring electricity bills and tax hikes, continue with the public threatening more severe actions if their concerns aren’t promptly addressed.
