The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to formally address the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding India’s decision not to participate in the upcoming Champions Trophy, scheduled to be hosted in Pakistan.
Following the government’s guidelines, the PCB will send a letter to the ICC in two days. After extensive legal advice, the PCB will request the ICC clarify the reasons for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision not to send its team to Pakistan for the major tournament.
The PCB plans to adopt a strong position, as advised by the government and will seek a detailed written justification from the BCCI for their decision.
Previously, the BCCI had verbally informed the ICC of its decision, citing its reluctance to send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. The ICC then relayed this decision to the PCB in writing.
In response, the PCB consulted with the government to decide on the next steps. The board also plans to contact other cricket boards to explain its stance and seek support concerning India’s withdrawal.
This move is part of a broader directive from the federal government, which has recently taken a firmer approach to sporting relations with India. This shift reflects Islamabad’s intention to challenge what it sees as New Delhi’s politicization of sports.
The PCB is also set to emphasize the potential impact of India’s absence on international cricket relations and ICC revenues, noting the significant financial consequences of missing Pakistan-India matches.
Furthermore, the federal government has directed the PCB to reject any proposals for a hybrid model of hosting the Champions Trophy, insisting that the matches be held entirely in Pakistan.
