The National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, recently elected, has scheduled a Parliament session on March 9 to elect Pakistan’s president.
As announced in a Sunday notification, the session is set for Saturday at 10 am.
In the upcoming presidential race, former president Asif Ali Zardari will compete against Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party. Both are rallying support for Saturday’s election.
Their nomination papers were submitted at the Islamabad High Court on Saturday, with Zardari’s by Farooq H Naik and Saleem Mandviwala and Achakzai’s by PTI’s Sardar Latif Khosa and Omar Ayub Khan.
Achakzai, with Sunni Ittehad Council’s support, sought endorsement from JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who later withdrew from the voting process.
Dr Arif Alvi, the current president, remains in office beyond his term, awaiting the election of his successor.
