Pakistan’s Military Courts have sentenced 25 individuals for attacks on Pakistan Army installations in Pakistan.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Saturday that military courts have issued sentences to 25 individuals involved in the May 9, 2023, attacks on state installations. The Field General Court Martial (FGCM) has completed the first phase of promulgating these sentences, following a series of violent incidents linked to protests that erupted after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on corruption charges.

The pronounced sentences address various incidents, including assaults on military headquarters and other critical facilities. New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb has expressed grave concerns over the potential repercussions of these events, emphasizing the need for robust security measures during large public gatherings. The economic impact of cancelling major events like Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks due to security fears is estimated at $98 million.

“Trying civilians in military courts is contrary to international law.

All convicted individuals retain the right to appeal their sentences, as affirmed by ISPR. This ongoing legal process reflects the complexities involved in addressing the fallout from politically charged events that have escalated to violence.

The violent episodes occurred during protests triggered by Khan’s detention, leading to widespread unrest and the subsequent arrest of scores of PTI workers. Over 100 civilians are currently facing military trials related to these events. PTI has disavowed any involvement in the attacks on military installations and has called for a judicial investigation into the matter.

The FGCM’s decision to proceed with these sentences marks a significant step in the military’s response to the May 9 incidents. As the legal proceedings continue, further details about the sentences, and the status of appeals will be forthcoming from official sources.

This series of events underscores the ongoing tensions within Pakistan’s political landscape and the challenges facing the country’s legal and security apparatus.
