In his first visit to Iran since assuming the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) role, General Asim Munir has embarked on a two-day official journey, as reported by the military. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Munir is expected to engage with Iran’s military and civilian leaders. The discussions will focus on bilateral matters surrounding defense and security cooperation.
Global Diplomatic Efforts and Previous International Engagements
This visit marks General Munir’s fifth international trip since taking command of the Pakistan Army. In April, he visited China, aiming to “enhance bilateral military relations.” During this trip, the COAS met China’s State Councilor Wang Yi and the People’s Liberation Army commander at their headquarters.
Earlier in the year, General Munir also visited Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United Kingdom. In Saudi Arabia, he met with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to “review bilateral relations and ways of enhancing them.” The COAS later visited the UAE and conferred with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussing defense and military ties and exploring ways to bolster military cooperation between the two nations. Finally, in February, at the invitation of the British Ministry of Defence, General Munir journeyed to the UK to discuss strategic security-related issues.
