Pakistani educator Sister Zeph, known for her exceptional dedication to teaching underprivileged children, has been awarded the prestigious Global Teacher Prize 2023.
The accolade, organized by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO and Dubai Cares, honours her significant contributions to education in Gujranwala, Punjab.
Starting at just 13 years old, Sister Zeph founded a school in her home’s courtyard for children unable to afford formal education. Balancing long work hours with teaching, she managed to provide free education and, over 26 years, expanded the school to accommodate more than 200 students in a new building. Her journey is a testament to her resilience and commitment to making education accessible to all.
Sister Zeph’s Vision and Impact
Apart from running the school, Sister Zeph is renowned for her multifaceted educational initiatives. She conducts self-defence classes for girls, offers financial aid to families struggling with education expenses, and operates a vocational centre that has aided over 6,000 women. Her work has empowered her students and made her an advocate for women’s rights and children’s education globally.
With the Global Teacher Prize funds, Sister Zeph aspires to build a school on 10 acres for the country’s poorest families, creating an inclusive educational environment. Her plans also include establishing a shelter for orphans, combining education with self-sustenance through on-site food production and inviting teachers worldwide to share diverse knowledge.
