Pakistan led a heated UN Security Council (UNSC) debate, condemning Israel’s recent strike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders as “illegal” and a threat to regional stability. This confrontation at the UNSC again highlighted the complex dynamic between Pakistan, Israel, and other involved nations.
The emergency meeting, requested by Pakistan, Algeria, and Somalia, saw Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad call the attack a “brazen assault” on Qatar’s sovereignty.
Ahmad criticised Israel’s strike as a violation of the UN Charter’s Article 2(4), targeting a residential area and endangering civilians. He said it aimed to sabotage Gaza peace talks, noting Qatar’s key mediation role. “This is a deliberate attempt to derail diplomacy,” he stated. In this context, the Pakistan and Israel tensions at the UNSC are pivotal. Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Qatar, citing recent visits by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Israel’s ambassador justified the strike by comparing it to the US killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, claiming no immunity for Hamas. Ahmad rejected this as “ludicrous,” highlighting Pakistan’s counterterrorism sacrifices and accusing Israel of deflecting from its violations. “Israel pretends to be the victim but stands exposed,” he said, per Reuters.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani denounced the attack as a sovereignty violation, targeting Hamas negotiators. UN official Rosemary DiCarlo called it an “alarming escalation.” The US, France, UK, China, Algeria, and Somalia condemned the strike, urging de-escalation and support for Qatar’s mediation.
The Pakistan-Israel UNSC clash in 2025 underscores deep divisions over international law and peace efforts. The Doha strike threatens Gaza ceasefire talks, raising concerns about regional stability. Pakistan’s leadership highlights the role of multilateral forums in addressing global conflicts.
