Pakistan Revises Statement on Israel, Omitting Specific Reference

The Pakistani government adjusted its official stance on recent events involving Israel, leading to a significant revision of its initial press release. Under the oversight of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a critical amendment to their statement by removing the phrase “Israeli Adventurism.”

The change occurred after the initial press release, which explicitly criticized “Israeli Adventurism,” met with substantial backlash. The modified version now refers to “Adventurism,” omitting any direct reference to Israel. This alteration underscores the current administration’s challenges in managing the delicate terminology associated with Israel in its diplomatic communications.

The situation that triggered these press releases was the death of Ismail Haniyeh, which had deeply affected Ishaq Dar, prompting a swift governmental response. However, the vagueness of the revised statement drew criticism from seasoned diplomats.

Maleeha Lodhi, a former Pakistani Ambassador to the UN, the US, and the UK. Lodhi criticized the revised press release as “weak and disappointing,” highlighting its failure to directly name Israel in the context of what she described as a “genocidal war against the Palestinian people.”

A weak, disappointing statement. Adventurism? It doesn't even say by whom? Israel is engaged in a genocidal war against the Palestinian people. It flouts international law, defies the UNSC, ICJ…..and much more. And this is all we have to say? https://t.co/36jH7S9g3r

She noted that the statement failed to address serious concerns regarding international law violations and defiance of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction with the government’s approach to this international issue.
