On August 10, 2025, an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near Spezand Station in Quetta, causing five coaches of the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express to derail. As a result, Pakistan Railways (PR) suspended all train operations from Quetta until security clearance was obtained. Although one passenger sustained injuries, all 440 people on board were reported safe. Rescue teams and security agencies responded promptly to secure the area, according to a PR spokesperson.
Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi announced the suspension of key services due to security concerns:
- Jaffar Express (Peshawar to Quetta): Suspended August 10–13.
- Jaffar Express (Quetta to Peshawar): Suspended August 11–14.
- Bolan Mail (Karachi to Quetta): Suspended August 10–15.
Abbasi emphasised, “Terrorists’ cowardly acts cannot weaken our resolve.” Operations will resume once security clearance is obtained, with passengers being transported back to Quetta in the interim.
The incident comes after an attack on the Jaffar Express on March 11, 2025, in which attackers took hostages, leading to a two-day security operation. The security situation in Balochistan remains volatile due to recent militant activities, raising significant concerns, especially following the death of 33 terrorists in a border clash on August 7-8. These events highlight the ongoing threats to infrastructure in the region.

The suspensions disrupt travel in Balochistan, a key region for Pakistan’s connectivity. PR’s focus on safety reflects efforts to protect passengers amid rising threats. The quick response to the IED blast demonstrates coordination between PR and security forces, though delays may affect public confidence in rail travel.
