The Pakistan petrol subsidy for motorcyclists plan is under consideration as the government looks to ease the burden of rising fuel costs. According to sources, the proposed scheme will offer subsidised petrol to selected vehicle owners through an app-based system.
Initially, the subsidy is expected to target 70cc motorcycles and rickshaws, providing petrol at Rs100 per litre less under a quota-based mechanism. To implement the scheme, authorities have developed a mobile application with support from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. The app will allow users to register their motorcycles and access the subsidy.
Only registered vehicles will qualify for the scheme. Unregistered motorcycles or those pending registration will not be eligible. Sources indicate that the subsidy will mainly apply to 70cc motorcycles. Higher-capacity or luxury bikes are unlikely to be included in the initial phase. This targeted approach aims to benefit lower-income commuters who rely on small motorcycles for daily transport.
The proposal comes as petrol prices in Pakistan have increased significantly. The government recently set the new petrol price at Rs458.40 per litre. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the rise was driven by escalating global energy costs linked to regional conflict.
Officials stated that the government is making difficult decisions in response to rising crude oil prices. At the same time, the Prime Minister has introduced austerity measures, including salary cuts for cabinet members.
Authorities have emphasised the need for national unity amid economic pressure. The subsidy plan is expected to be presented to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval soon. If approved, the scheme could begin as early as next week.
Officials say the initiative is designed to provide targeted relief while managing fiscal constraints.
