Preparations to introduce newly designed currency notes in Pakistan are complete, but the State Bank of Pakistan is awaiting final approval from the federal government before proceeding with printing.
According to reports aired by a private television channel, the Security Printing Corporation (SPC) has confirmed that the new banknotes will feature modern, enhanced security features. However, the corporation has yet to receive the final, government-approved designs.
Officials said that once formal approval is granted, the printing process will require at least two months. They added that modern printing machinery is already in place to ensure efficient production of the new notes.
Amer Shams, Senior Manager of Printing at the Security Printing Corporation, said consultations between the State Bank and SPC have already taken place. He confirmed that technical discussions on printing requirements and capacity are complete.
Shams explained that the State Bank is still considering whether to introduce the redesigned currency in phases or to launch all denominations simultaneously. He added that the central bank is expected to issue an official timeline for the printing process later this year.
Sources said the formal order to print the new currency notes will be issued only after approval from Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet. The State Bank has reportedly shortlisted the proposed designs and forwarded them to the government for review.
If cabinet approval is secured, officials indicated that the newly designed currency notes could be introduced in the latter part of 2026. The move is expected to strengthen currency security and reduce the risk of counterfeiting.
