Recent interactions suggest a calming of tensions between Pakistan and Iran. This follows the controversial strike by Iran, termed “illegal,” which heightened tensions significantly. Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the Foreign Office Spokesperson, reported a constructive conversation between Pakistani and Iranian officials. Additional Foreign Secretary Rahim Hayat Qureshi and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Rasoul Mousavi had a positive exchange, as shared on Baloch’s social media.
Retaliatory Strikes and Diplomatic Responses
Pakistan responded to Iran’s strike in Balochistan, which resulted in casualties, by targeting terrorist hideouts inside Iran. The Pakistan Army named the operation “Marg Bar Sarmachar” and targeted the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF). In a social media post, the FO additional secretary echoed Mousavi’s sentiments about the importance of fraternal relations and positive dialogue between the two nations. He emphasized the need for coordinated action against common challenges like terrorism.
On the other hand, Mousavi expressed on social media that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iran should be the endpoint for these tensions. He highlighted that the ongoing strife benefits only terrorists and enemies of both countries.
National Security Discussions in Pakistan
The Prime Minister, cutting his trip to Davos short, will oversee discussions on the recent strike by Iran and its implications. The cabinet will assess the border situation, operational preparedness, and the Foreign Ministry’s briefing. Additionally, they will discuss preparations for the upcoming February 8 elections. The NSC, comprising cabinet members, military chiefs, and intelligence officials, will consult on the current Pak-Iran border situation, with significant decisions expected regarding national security.
