On August 28, 2025, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed that Pakistan’s men’s hockey team, the Green Shirts, will compete in the FIH Pro League 2025–26 season. This marks their return to elite competition after a six-year absence. The team accepted the invitation following New Zealand’s withdrawal and secured Rs250 million in government funding.
The FIH invited Pakistan after Hockey New Zealand withdrew from the nine-team tournament, despite their FIH Nations Cup win in Malaysia earlier in 2025. Initially, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) faced a deadline of August 12 to confirm participation. However, they requested an extension until August 20, awaiting financial support. On August 27, the government approved Rs250 million, enabling PHF to confirm the team’s entry the next day.
The seventh edition of the FIH Pro League will feature Pakistan alongside:
- India
- Argentina
- Australia
- Belgium
- England
- Germany
- Netherlands
- Spain
Pakistan replaces Ireland, relegated after finishing last in the 2024–25 season. Notably, the tournament will see Pakistan face arch-rivals India, who narrowly avoided relegation last season.

FIH President Tayyab Ikram hailed Pakistan’s inclusion, stating, “Great to see Pakistan back in elite competition. This is a major milestone for world hockey.” He emphasised the team’s rich history, with three Olympic gold medals (1960, 1968, 1984), and predicted increased viewership. “Pakistan’s participation will boost the Pro League’s visibility,” Ikram added.

Pakistan qualified for the Pro League through their strong performance in the FIH Nations Cup, earning their first-ever berth in the competition. However, their 2019 attempt was cut short due to withdrawals from matches against Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, leading to a suspension.
The Green Shirts’ return offers a chance to revive Pakistan’s hockey legacy. The funding boost ensures preparation for the tri-series against the UAE and Afghanistan, followed by the Asia Cup 2025. Facing top teams like India will test their mettle and draw global attention, especially given the historic rivalry.
Pakistan’s last Pro League stint in 2019 ended abruptly due to logistical issues. This time, the PHF’s financial backing signals commitment. The team aims to showcase aggressive, competitive play in the “League of the Best,” as Ikram called it. Success could elevate Pakistan’s standing in world hockey and inspire future talent.
