As Pakistan battles an intense heat wave, residents must prepare for daily power outages lasting several hours caused by an electricity generation shortfall of 6,705 megawatts. This power deficit will result in 14-hour daily blackouts throughout the country.
The Power Division spokesperson reported that the national electricity production stands at 20,795MW, against a demand of 27,500MW. Currently, the private sector generates 9,048MW of power, while hydropower contributes 7,349MW.
Electricity Generation: Sources and Shortfall
State-owned thermal power plants generate 639 MW, and wind and solar power plants contribute 534 MW and 123 MW, respectively. An additional 115MW comes from Bagasse-based power, and nuclear power plants produce 2,988MW.
The spokesperson noted that unannounced load shedding occurs in certain regions due to technical issues, predominantly in areas with high energy losses and power theft.
Meanwhile, despite the intermittent rain in Punjab’s capital, the Lahore Electric Supply Company has addressed all weather-impacted areas. The company observed a drop in power demand from 4,400 megawatts to 3,600MW and confirmed no power shortfall for LESCO.
Assuring a stable transmission system and an ongoing power supply, the spokesperson urged the public to maintain a safe distance from electrical installations during the monsoon season.
