Pakistan has witnessed a disturbing increase in suicide attacks in 2023, hitting the highest level since 2014, as reported by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
The year 2023 saw 29 suicide attacks, leading to the loss of 329 lives and injuring 582 individuals, the highest since 2013. Compared to 2022, there has been a 93% increase in the number of attacks, a 226% rise in deaths, and a 101% surge in injuries.
In 2023, militant attacks totaled 623, up from 380 in 2022, with suicide attacks constituting 4.7% of the total, an increase from the 3.9% share in 2022.
Regional Impact and Target Analysis
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) was most affected, with 23 suicide attacks, followed by Balochistan and Sindh. The newly merged districts in KP were particularly hard-hit. Security forces emerged as the primary targets, followed by civilians, with security personnel accounting for 48% of deaths and 58% of injuries. Civilian casualties were also significant.
The historical trend of suicide attacks in Pakistan shows a decline from 30 in 2014 to three in 2019. However, 2022 marked a significant rise, with 15 attacks, and this trend escalated in 2023, reaching a peak with 29 suicide attacks. This worrying increase calls for urgent attention to address security and counter-terrorism measures in Pakistan.
