Pakistan cricketers are considering an early exit from the Big Bash League (BBL) as preparations intensify for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Several national players currently feature for different BBL franchises. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg recently said Pakistan players would remain available for the full BBL season despite Pakistan’s scheduled tour of Sri Lanka.
Pakistan will play three T20 internationals against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on January 7, 10, and 11, 2026. Sri Lanka will also host World Cup matches starting on February 7, underscoring the importance of early adaptation to local conditions.
Sources said several players have contacted the national team’s think tank. They want to feature in the Sri Lanka series to adjust to slower pitches and different playing conditions. Players fear a direct transition from Australian surfaces to World Cup venues could hurt their performance.
When players signed BBL contracts, officials had not yet scheduled the Sri Lanka series. Some players now worry critics may accuse them of prioritising league earnings over national preparation if they struggle at the World Cup.

Selectors have shown interest in testing new talent during the Sri Lanka tour. For that reason, they may allow senior players to complete their BBL commitments. However, any player who returns without official clearance risks financial penalties for breaching league contracts.
If the Pakistan Cricket Board formally recalls players for national duty, contracts allow exemptions. Officials expect a final decision after consultations with players and selectors in the coming days.
The following Pakistan cricketers are currently playing in the BBL:
- Babar Azam (Sydney Sixers)
- Shaheen Shah Afridi (Brisbane Heat)
- Hasan Ali (Adelaide Strikers)
- Mohammad Rizwan (Melbourne Renegades)
- Haris Rauf (Melbourne Stars)
- Shadab Khan (Sydney Thunder)
