On May 20, 2025, Pakistan’s federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, recognising his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Mursoos.

Operation Bunyanum Mursoos was launched in response to an Indian missile attack on May 6–7, 2025, which Pakistan described as an “unprovoked and unjustified” violation of its sovereignty.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF), under Air Chief Marshal Sidhu’s command, demonstrated exceptional professionalism, reportedly downing five Indian aircraft and an Israeli-made Heron combat drone. The aircraft, which included three Rafale jets, one MiG-29, and one SU-series jet, were intercepted in multiple locations, including Bhatinda, Jammu, Akhnoor, Srinagar, and Avantipur. The cabinet praised the PAF’s swift and coordinated response, which bolstered national security.

Air Chief’s Tenure Extension

In a unanimous decision, the cabinet extended Air Chief Marshal Sidhu’s service, originally set to conclude, to ensure continuity in leadership. The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted Sidhu’s strategic role in defending Pakistan’s airspace during the operation, underscoring his contribution to national sovereignty.

The cabinet also approved high state awards for military personnel, war veterans, martyrs, and civilians who supported Operation Bunyanum Mursoos. Additionally, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir was promoted to Field Marshal, a recommendation from Prime Minister Sharif. The cabinet lauded Munir’s “exceptional military leadership, bravery, and strategic command” in coordinating the armed forces’ response to the Indian attack, which targeted civilian areas, including women and children.

The cabinet condemned India’s missile strike as a violation of Pakistan’s territorial integrity, noting its impact on civilian populations. The armed forces’ response, led by General Munir and Air Chief Marshal Sidhu, was described as a courageous defence of the homeland. These actions reflect Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty amid regional tensions.
