Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh’s Senior Minister for Transport, announced on Tuesday that the Edhi Orange Line has officially been integrated with the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This integration occurred at the Orange Line bus depot, marking a major step toward improved urban mobility in Karachi.
Speaking at the integration ceremony, Memon said the move expanded the Orange Line from 4 to 10 stops. The upgraded route now allows passengers to travel seamlessly from Orangi Town to Nagan Chowrangi. This significantly improves access for residents of the city’s western districts.
Following the integration, Orange Line buses will operate along the Green Line BRT track. Memon said this change extended the Orange Line corridor from four kilometres to 10 kilometres. This strengthens connectivity and reduces travel time for daily commuters.
He added that the merged Orange and Green Line systems aim to serve up to 100,000 passengers per day. He also highlighted that Pakistan is the only country where commuters can use a single card to travel across two integrated BRT lines.

Addressing the Red Line BRT project, Memon acknowledged delays caused by technical and administrative challenges. He said authorities are working to complete the main corridors by March or April. Meanwhile, construction on depots and supporting infrastructure continues in parallel.
The minister confirmed that hundreds of new buses are in the procurement pipeline. There are 500 buses and an additional batch of 100 currently in process. He expressed concern about delays in delivering 150 buses previously promised by the prime minister. He said the Sindh government would again press the federal authorities to honour that commitment.
Memon stressed that the provincial government remains committed to resolving transport challenges across Sindh. This will be through sustained investment in mass transit and public transport projects. He reiterated that no individual or group would be allowed to occupy government land.

Providing further updates, he said the Green Line BRT extension track spans 1.8 kilometres from Numaish Chowrangi to Jama Cloth Market. Once completed, commuters will be able to travel directly from Surjani Town to Jama Cloth. Leaders from the PML-N, PPP, and MQM-Pakistan have pledged cooperation for Karachi’s development.
Murtaza Wahab, the Mayor of Karachi, said Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited has committed to opening the Green Line extension to the public by October 31, 2026. He also noted that Karachi has introduced a dedicated BRT service for women in the region, alongside the arrival of new electric buses.
Memon announced that bus routes in Hyderabad will expand. Also, People’s Bus services will launch in Khairpur, Shikarpur, and Tando Allahyar. He also confirmed that work has begun on the right-of-way for the Red Line BRT in Karachi.
Starting on Wednesday, a double-decker bus service will begin operating on a trial basis from Malir to Shahrah-e-Faisal. Memon said the service aims to ease congestion and reduce overcrowding. More double-decker buses are planned for future rollout.
The Orange Line BRT project began in 2016 under the Sindh Mass Transit Authority as a four-kilometre route. It was from the Orangi Town Office to Matriculation Board Office Chowrangi. Although authorities expected completion by 2017, the project remained shelved for six years before being completed in 2022.
During this period, costs were revised twice, with the final budget reaching Rs5.5 billion. The figure includes procurement, maintenance, and operational costs for 20 buses, along with the extension to Nagan Chowrangi. Due to staffing constraints, operational responsibility for the Orange Line was transferred for three years to the federal government’s Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited.
