New Zealand MP Golriz Ghahraman, representing the Green Party, has resigned after being accused of shoplifting.
BBC News reports that Ghahraman, a former UN human rights lawyer and New Zealand’s first refugee government member since 2017, is accused of theft from clothing stores in Auckland and Wellington. CCTV footage allegedly shows her taking a designer handbag from an Auckland boutique. While not charged, the 42-year-old MP admitted her actions fell short of the standards expected of elected officials and expressed remorse.
Acknowledging Stress and Mental Health
Ghahraman linked her behaviour to work-related stress, expressing regret for disappointing people. She noted that a mental health evaluation revealed she was unwell, leading to irrational actions.
Green Party co-leader James Shaw highlighted the severe threats Ghahraman has faced, including sexual and physical violence and death threats, since her election. These threats, coupled with ongoing police investigations, might have influenced her actions.
Ghahraman has been vocal about the abuse she faced due to her Iranian heritage and public stances. She has required security measures, including alarms and escorts, due to threats, particularly from white supremacists in 2017.
Despite her controversial views, such as her stance on Israel’s military actions, Ghahraman’s resignation is seen as a result of compounded stress and trauma. Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson acknowledged Ghahraman’s distress and expressed support, emphasizing the broader issue of treatment towards women in the public eye, especially women of colour.
