The Cincinnati Reds face a significant setback in the 2024 MLB season. Noelvi Marte, 22, a Dominican infielder, has been handed an 80-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on banned substances.
The commissioner’s office announced the suspension, which will take effect at the start of the regular season, and Marte will serve it without compensation.
Marte tested positive for Boldenone, an anabolic steroid that has led to numerous suspensions in the league, including a notable case involving pitcher Jenrry Mejia. After three positive tests, Mejia became the first MLB player to receive a lifetime ban, though the Commissioner later lifted his ban.
With Marte sidelined, the Reds must reevaluate their strategy for the upcoming season. Marte, considered a top prospect within MLB circles, holds the 23rd and 21st positions in Baseball America and MLB Pipeline’s prospect rankings, respectively. His absence is particularly impactful given his standing as the Reds’ premier prospect and National Rookie of the Year contender.
Marte’s debut season highlighted his potential, featuring a .822 OPS with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs over 35 games, primarily as a third baseman. His preseason performance further underscored his promise, with three hits in ten at-bats over four games.
Acquired from the Seattle Mariners in a 2022 trade for pitcher Luis Castillo, Marte’s journey to the Reds was highly anticipated. Despite the current setback, his undeniable talent leaves fans and the organization looking forward to his post-suspension return.
