Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign swiftly moved past her significant loss in Nevada’s primary, affirming the former United Nations ambassador’s commitment to continue her uphill battle against ex-U.S. President Donald Trump.
Despite being the sole candidate on the ballot, Haley was decisively beaten in Nevada’s Republican primary on Tuesday. She secured merely 31% of votes against an overwhelming 63% opting for “none of these candidates,” as Nevada’s election authorities reported.
The primary outcome, which did not involve delegate allocation, symbolizes more than its impacts. Trump anticipated securing all 26 of Nevada’s delegates in a subsequent state party caucus on Thursday, which would likely further erode Haley’s race chances.
Olivia Perez-Cubas, a spokesperson for Haley, minimized the significance of the Nevada defeat, suggesting the process was skewed in Trump’s favour. “We didn’t bother to play a game rigged for Trump,” Perez-Cubas remarked. “We’re full steam ahead in South Carolina and beyond.”
Haley’s strategy heavily depends on a victory in South Carolina, her home state, where she was governor for six years. Nonetheless, polls leading up to the February 24 primary show Trump with a substantial lead.
In the days leading to Nevada’s primary, Haley’s team endeavoured to temper expectations, acknowledging her considerable polling deficit to Trump, emblematic of the ex-president’s dominance in modern Republican Party dynamics.
Betsey Ankney, Haley’s campaign manager, emphasized the campaign’s disregard for Nevada, stating, “We have not spent a dime nor an ounce of energy on Nevada.
Despite these efforts, an individual close to Haley, preferring anonymity for candid discourse, labelled Nevada’s results “embarrassing.”
Foregoing Nevada, Haley travelled to California this week for fundraising, with plans for an event in Los Angeles. Trump aims to eliminate Haley from contention in South Carolina, focusing on a potential November showdown with Democratic President Joe Biden.
Following the Nevada primary, Trump taunted Haley on his Truth Social platform, predicting her imminent concession of defeat. Meanwhile, Biden secured the Nevada Democratic primary with 89% of the vote, positioning for a likely rematch against Trump, which Biden frames as crucial for U.S. democracy’s resilience.
Despite facing numerous legal challenges, including federal and state criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election loss, Trump retains significant support within the Republican voter base and among lawmakers. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the charges as politically motivated attempts to thwart his return to the presidency.
A federal appeals court recently refuted Trump’s broad immunity claim, setting the stage for a potential criminal trial as Trump pledges to appeal. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to deliberate on his eligibility for Colorado’s ballot in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack intended to obstruct Biden’s victory certification.”
