Newcastle United strengthened their position for a Champions League spot following an impressive 4-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park.
Callum Wilson was instrumental in the win, netting a late goal and assisting Bruno Guimaraes, which catapulted Newcastle to third in the Premier League standings. This significant leap moves them closer to joining the ranks of Europe’s top-tier football clubs.
The prowess of Kieran Trippier was on full display as he engineered a Deniz Undav own-goal and a Dan Burn header with precise crosses, providing Newcastle with a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime.
Brighton didn’t concede without a fight, pulling back a goal in the second half courtesy of Undav. However, the Seagulls’ pressing attack to equalize left them vulnerable at the back, enabling Newcastle to exploit the gaps. Wilson took full advantage of this, scoring in the match’s final moments. Shortly after, Wilson assisted Guimaraes, putting the game out of reach at 4-1.
Manager Eddie Howe expressed his pleasure with the team’s display, especially the performance of the first half. However, despite missed opportunities, Howe stressed the importance of focusing on upcoming games, with Leicester City next on the schedule.
Although Newcastle is within arm’s reach of Champions League football, Howe advocated prudence, acknowledging there is still work to be done.
The win also boosts Newcastle’s chances of finishing in the top four, potentially without needing to compete in another match if Liverpool falls short against Aston Villa. Even with the loss, Brighton can still contend for a Europa League spot next season. Manager Roberto De Zerbi shuffled the lineup to keep the squad refreshed after a notable victory over Arsenal.
Newcastle asserted their dominance from the get-go, as an unfortunate Undav headed the ball into his net from a Trippier corner. Burn added to Newcastle’s lead, out-jumping the Brighton defense to score from a Trippier free-kick right before halftime.
Newcastle could have clinched an even more comfortable victory, but Jason Steele’s superb save kept Miguel Almiron at bay early in the second half. However, Undav responded quickly for Brighton, seizing on a Billy Gilmour through-ball.
However, the last word belonged to Newcastle, as Wilson’s 89th-minute goal, followed by his assist for Guimaraes in extra time, sealed the victory.
This victory sends a wave of ecstasy amongst Newcastle’s loyal fanbase as their team edges closer to the prestigious Champions League berth.
