New Zealand clinched an eight-wicket triumph against Bangladesh, marking their third consecutive victory in the World Cup 2023 at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The Black Caps, chasing a target of 246, faced initial hurdles, stumbling at 37-1 in the opening 10 overs. Despite these early setbacks, the combined prowess of Kane Williamson and Devon Conway bolstered the innings. Conway, in his spirited attempt, succumbed to Shakib Al Hasan’s delivery for 45. Unfazed by the loss, Williamson, back from a knee surgery hiatus, crafted a phenomenal 108-run partnership with Daryl Mitchell, who emerged as the top-scorer with an explosive 89 runs. Unfortunately, Williamson’s brilliant knock of 78 was cut short when a ball struck his thumb, leading to a retired hurt decision.
Bangladesh’s Early Collapse and Resilience
In the innings, Bangladesh grappled with initial setbacks, losing four wickets at 56 runs. Yet, the experienced duo, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib-Al-Hasan, stitched together a 96-run partnership, offering a glimmer of hope. With Rahim’s 66 and Hasan’s 40 and a late surge from veteran Mahmudullah, Bangladesh managed to post a competitive 245.
Lockie Ferguson was the standout bowler for the Kiwis, claiming three wickets, while Matt Henry and Trent Boult added two each.
