Netflix’s upcoming documentary, Untold: The Liver King, set to premiere on May 13, 2025, profiles controversial fitness influencer Brian Johnson, known as “The Liver King.”

The film, part of Netflix’s Untold series, has ignited debate for spotlighting Johnson’s “ancestral living” philosophy, which promotes intense workouts and a raw meat diet, including organ meats like liver. Critics question Netflix’s decision to platform Johnson, while others are curious about the exposé on his rise and the broader influencer-driven health trend.

Through viral social media videos showcasing his muscular physique and unconventional diet, Brian Johnson gained millions of followers. His supplement brand capitalised on these health ideals, but allegations of inauthenticity, including reported steroid use, have shadowed his transformation. Director Joe Pearlman told Netflix, “The truth was crazier than I imagined,” hinting at revelations about Johnson’s journey and the quest for online virality. The documentary examines how shock value fuels social media algorithms, raising ethical questions about influencer culture.

The trailer, released on April 22, 2025, drew mixed responses. Some viewers expressed intrigue, while others criticised Netflix, commenting, “This might be rock bottom for you,” reflecting concerns about amplifying controversial figures. The backlash echoes debates around influencer accountability in health and wellness.

Untold explores compelling sports and wellness stories, with past episodes covering Caitlyn Jenner’s Olympic journey and Steve McNair’s murder. The Liver King continues this tradition, probing the intersection of fame, fitness, and digital influence.

While the documentary promises an in-depth look at Johnson’s persona, its focus on a polarising figure risks glorifying questionable health practices. Netflix’s choice aligns with its strategy of provocative content, but it must balance storytelling with responsibility to avoid misleading viewers about unverified wellness claims.
