Netflix has received legal notice from Indian political analyst Mithun Vijay Kumar concerning defamatory remarks made against Madhuri Dixit in an episode of the popular show The Big Bang Theory.
Although Netflix did not produce the sitcom, it is available for streaming in countries like India and Pakistan. Kumar demands that the platform remove the offensive episode.
In the second season’s first episode, titled ‘The Bad Fish Paradigm,’ characters Sheldon Cooper and Raj Koothrapalli compare Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. Raj describes Dixit as “a leprous prostitute” in comparison to Rai. Kumar argues that the episode is offensive, defamatory, and promotes sexism and misogyny. He threatens to take further action if Netflix does not respond.
Kumar shared the legal notice on Twitter, expressing his disturbance over the derogatory dialogue and its offense to Indian culture and women. He emphasized the importance of holding streaming service providers accountable and ensuring their sensitivity to their communities’ cultural values and sentiments.
Streaming services must take such issues seriously and address offensive or defamatory content swiftly. Implementing clear guidelines and rigorous screening processes could help ensure that content is respectful, inclusive, and free from harmful stereotypes. Kumar hopes this incident will prompt streaming services to work towards creating a more equitable and respectful media landscape.
