The nomination papers for Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), to contest the election from the NA-130 constituency have been accepted.
PML-N Lahore leader Bilal Yaseen confirmed the news, who served as the covering candidate for the constituency. Sharif, a former three-time premier, filed his nomination papers from Lahore’s NA-130 this past Sunday.
In a media address, Bilal Yaseen expressed that Nawaz Sharif plans to contest the elections from National Assembly constituencies in Mansehra and Lahore, aiming for a fourth term as prime minister. Yaseen, alongside Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer, Amjad Parvez, appeared at the Returning Officer’s (RO) office for the filing process.
The document verification process for the candidates will continue until December 30, including verifying documents for minority and women candidates. Sharif, who returned to Pakistan in October after a four-year self-imposed exile in London, is eyeing a fourth stint in power. However, significant legal challenges lie ahead for him to participate in the general elections.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had disqualified Sharif from holding public office in July 2017 following the Panama Papers case, leading to his resignation as prime minister.
