A National Guardsman, Jack Teixeira, has been arrested by FBI agents for allegedly leaking sensitive US government information, including details concerning the Ukraine war.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the arrest was made due to the unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information. Teixeira, a 21-year-old airman, was reportedly the leader of an online chat room on Discord called Thug Shaker Central, where the leaked documents first emerged.
US media outlets identified Teixeira after The Washington Post reported that a man working on a US military base had posted hundreds of pages of documents on Discord.
The New York Times cited a “trail of digital evidence” linking Teixeira to the chat group where the documents surfaced. The security breach has exposed US apprehensions about the viability of a forthcoming counteroffensive by Kyiv’s forces against Russian troops, concerns about Ukrainian air defenses, and evidence of US spying on allies.
President Joe Biden expressed concern about the leaks and mentioned that the intelligence community and the Justice Department were “getting close” to identifying the source of the leak. According to reports, the alleged leaker, known by the nickname “OG,” had regularly posted documents in the chat group for months. Approximately 24 people, including individuals from Russia and Ukraine, had bonded over their mutual interests in guns, military gear, and religion.
The leaks revealed that OG had a “dark view of the government.” They saw the United States, particularly law enforcement and the intelligence community, as a sinister force aiming to suppress its citizens and keep them uninformed. Discord spokesperson stated that user safety is a priority and that the platform is cooperating with law enforcement regarding the breach of classified material
