The NAB chairman has authorised three different inquiries against Dr Asim Hussain on serious corruption charges amid some additional information being provided to the Bureau by some sources on yet another scam. This one involves the names of top-most PPP leaders as well as a retired general.

The NAB sources said that three inquiries authorised by the NAB chairman will focus on Dr Asim’s role in corruption cases relating to the affairs of Pakistan Medical Dental Council (PMDC), Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL), Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and illegal land allotments. An inquiry into Asim’s role in the LNG case is already with the NAB.

Sources said that these inquiries have been assigned to the NAB office Karachi.

The NAB sources said that they had received some additional information on an alleged swindle of billions of rupees in the Neelam Jehlum project in which there is a role of Dr Asim and a retired colonel to benefit some top PPP leaders and a retired general.

Regarding the inquiries authorised against Dr Asim by the NAB chairman, the sources said that in the PMDC case, Dr Asim is alleged to have authorised the registration of 19 private medical colleges in violation of law and rules.

Two hospitals of Dr Asim are being investigated in the alleged land grabbing case whereas in the third inquiry the alleged role of Dr Asim in the SSGCL’s extraordinary favours to KESC will be probed.

Dr Asim, who is a close confidante of PPP Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, is already in hot waters following his August 26 arrest by the Rangers, who have just come up with a serious charge-sheet of corruption and criminal activities against him.

As reported on Thursday, the Sindh Rangers have come up with astonishing figures of corruption with hundreds of billions pocketed by Dr. Asim and his bosses.

The NAB officials confirmed to have received a 12-page Rangers report, which talks of truly enormous loot and plunder by Dr Asim and his political bosses.

The report states: “Dr Asim has been found involved in various acts of corruption, corrupt practices and misuse of authority as public office holder… He is responsible for inflicting losses to the tune of billions of rupees on the national exchequer…Huge amounts so embezzled were provided to his political masters, which were subsequently used in terror financing and funding target killers.”

According to the Rangers report, Dr Asim gave favours and illegal gas connections to KESC, which was owned by Abraaj Group with links to Asif Zardari and Faryal Talpur to the tune of Rs.100 billion.

Zuhair Siddiqui admitted that he had paid Rs6-7 billion to Dr Asim collected after illegal gas connections were given to companies, including KESC, which was allowed to keep Rs62 billion in unpaid gas receivables.

The Rangers report also alleged Dr Asim to have received daily kickbacks of Rs2 billion from PSO and Rs1 billion from Abbas and Khalid Steel Mills.
