Former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal’s convoy, travelling to Mirpurkhas to address a public rally, was pelted with stones, eggs and even tomatoes by unidentified individuals early yesterday evening.
The incident occurred at Civil Hospital Road, and after the convoy had changed its route at least twice due to the presence of hostile political party workers belonging to another party.
At least 10 cars were damaged, and just as many people were lightly injured during the incident. Those injured were occupants of the convoy.
“I will not harbour any ill feelings against anyone, those involved in the incident are our brothers too,” said Kamal, while speaking at the public gathering.
Pak Sarzameen Party
Kamal announced the formation of Pak Sarzameen Party earlier this month, and said the party will release its manifesto in the near future.
Earlier this March, when Kamal returned to Pakistan, the MQM dissident unleashed a salvo of bombastic ‘revelations’ against party supremo Altaf Hussain, accusing him of deception, addressing workers while intoxicated and poor running of the MQM.
Since then, the former mayor of Karachi has pulled former MQM heavyweights Advocate Anis, Raza Haroon, Anis Kaimkhani, Dr Sagheer, Iftikhar Alam, Waseem Aftab into his party.
A number of senior MQM members left the country suddenly around the time Kamal returned to Karachi, causing speculation as to the reasons behind their seemingly abrupt departure.
While certain party members left before Kamal’s visit to Karachi, uncertainty persists regarding the reasons for the absences of other party members.
