The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) earlier today contacted Sarfaraz Merchant, a close friend of MQM leader Muhammad Anwar and a suspect in a money laundering case, to probe allegations of MQM’s alleged ties with Indian intelligence.
FIA Director Inam Ghani is said to have telephoned Merchant and asked him to visit Pakistan. Merchant confirmed that he was approached by the Pakistani authorities but said he would take any decision till Monday after consultation with his lawyers.
On the other hand, Sindh FIA Director Shahid Hayat has contacted former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal, seeking his cooperation in the inquiry.
Sources told the media that investigators of the FIA are expected to meet with Kamal within the next 24 hours.
Kamal had also accused MQM’s top leadership of having links with the Indian secret service Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) during his press conference, in which he announced to end his association with the party.
