Zubair alias Charya, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) who was arrested during a raid on Friday has confessed to setting the Baldia Town factory on fire, sources said.
He told the investigators that the factory was set on fire at the behest of MQM’s then in-charge of Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui after owner of the Ali Enterprises refused to give Rs10 million in extortion.
Charya said he along with Rehman Bhola sprinkled highly inflammable substance around the the building of Ali Enterprises before setting it on fire.
The sources further said that the suspect has been remanded in 90-day physical remand.The fire at Ali Enterprises killed over 250 people in 2012.
