Molly Colleen Spears, a 35-year-old arts and language teacher at Barbers Hill School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, faces charges for allegedly having an improper relationship with a male student has surrendered to police on February 11, 2025, nearly a year after a grand jury indictment led to an arrest warrant.
Court records indicate Spears initiated contact with the student through text messages and an online service. Authorities have not disclosed his age. The alleged incident occurred on June 12, 2023.
A Chambers County grand jury indicted her on February 8, 2024, and authorities issued a warrant for her arrest on February 12, 2024. Despite the warrant, she remained at large until she turned herself in at the Chambers County Jail, accompanied by her attorney.
If convicted, Spears could face up to 20 years in prison.
Barbers Hill ISD hired Spears in 2021. According to a district spokesperson, she worked there until June 2023 and officially resigned earlier this month. Before that, she worked for Texas City ISD from 2014 to 2020 and Coldspring ISD from 2012 to 2014.
Her attorney, Christopher L. Tritico, questioned the delay in legal proceedings but emphasized that his client is prepared to challenge the allegations.
“Ms. Spears first learned about the charges two days ago. We immediately arranged her bond. I cannot explain why the case remained dormant for so long—that is a question for the prosecution. She looks forward to addressing these accusations and moving past this matter,” Tritico stated.
Growing Concerns Over Teacher Misconduct
Cases involving inappropriate teacher-student relationships have become a growing concern in the U.S. Between 2014 and 2019, over 500 reports of teacher misconduct surfaced, with nearly one in ten students experiencing some form of sexual misconduct by an educator.
Several factors contribute to this issue, including increased awareness, social media interactions, blurred boundaries, inadequate screening during hiring, and insufficient ethics training for teachers. As awareness grows, stricter oversight and preventive measures remain critical to addressing this alarming trend.
