Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has published a report detailing a significant action by the Narendra Modi government that led to the shutdown of over 200,000 user accounts in India.
The measure was taken from February 26 to March 26, 2024, after receiving 5,158 complaints, as the Times of India reported.
According to the report, the accounts were targeted under allegations of disseminating indecent content and engaging in terrorism-related activities, with a particular focus on silencing political opponents. The administration of X clarified that these closures were the result of meticulous investigations into the complaints received, which also included serious allegations such as the promotion of child sexual exploitation.
X’s monthly report emphasizes the platform’s continued efforts to eliminate content associated with terrorism and child sexual exploitation. The shutdown impacted various accounts, reported for offences ranging from content theft and sensitive adult content to hate speech and harassment.
The report also noted a prior significant action in April of the previous year when X deactivated a record 682,420 accounts in India. These accounts were primarily targeted for promoting child sexual exploitation and nudity during the period from January 26 to February 25. Additionally
