Federal Minister for Pakistan Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced that Pakistan has finalised an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the ML-1 railway project. He described the development as a major milestone in modernising the country’s rail infrastructure.
Speaking during a meeting in Islamabad with Defence Secretary Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali, the minister said authorities have moved from planning to implementation. He stressed that the government now aims to complete the project as soon as possible.
Senior officials attended the meeting, including the Power Division Secretary, Dr Fakhar Alam Irfan, and the National Logistics Cell Director General, Major General Farrukh Shehzad Rao.
Hanif Abbasi said Pakistan Railways has already launched its first Safe and Smart Railway Station in Rawalpindi. The station operates a 24/7 artificial intelligence–based monitoring system supported by 184 modern surveillance cameras. He said the system has significantly strengthened security and operational oversight.

As part of wider digital reforms, the minister confirmed the launch of a Rail Tag system. The technology enables real-time tracking of trains and rolling stock. Officials expect it to improve transparency, efficiency, and asset management.
The minister also announced the inauguration of a new weigh bridge in Karachi. He said the facility will curb overloading, protect railway infrastructure, enhance safety, and boost revenue.
According to the ministry, free Wi-Fi now covers nearly 70 per cent of passenger traffic at major railway stations nationwide. Authorities have also installed ATMs at several stations to support cashless transactions.
Defence Secretary Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali and other senior officials praised the reform measures. They commended the railways minister for accelerating institutional improvements across Pakistan Railways.
At the meeting’s conclusion, participants agreed to deepen inter-departmental coordination. They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing national development goals and public welfare in line with the prime minister’s vision.
