A girl who disappeared from Islamabad nearly 17 years ago has been found alive at the Edhi Centre in Karachi and reunited with her family. Kiran, now 27, met her father on Monday after police traced her through recent efforts by Safe City Punjab.
Kiran recalled that she left home to buy ice cream when she got lost. Someone later took her to the Edhi Centre in Islamabad, where staff cared for her before transferring her to the organisation’s Karachi facility under the supervision of the late Bilquis Edhi.
Sabah Faisal Edhi, the wife of the Edhi Foundation’s chairperson, said the organisation made multiple attempts to locate Kiran’s parents. Despite several trips to Islamabad, no information surfaced at the time, and Kiran continued to live at the Karachi centre.

Her father, Abdul Majeed, said the family searched relentlessly after she went missing but gradually lost hope as years passed without any progress. He described the call from the police informing him of Kiran’s whereabouts as a moment he never expected. He said being reunited with his daughter after nearly two decades brought him joy beyond words.
Kiran expressed deep gratitude to the Edhi Foundation for raising her with compassion and dignity. She said she received religious and academic education at the centre and learned essential life skills, including cooking and sewing. She described the experience as receiving “the love of a mother and father,” adding that the staff supported her through moments when she had given up hope of ever seeing her family again.
The Edhi Centre noted that Kiran is the fifth girl from Karachi whose family has been successfully traced. Her reunion marks another meaningful achievement in the foundation’s long-standing work to support missing and abandoned children.
