The University of Michigan fired head football coach Sherrone Moore on December 11, 2025. The termination resulted from an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. This sudden move created a major crisis for the Wolverines during a critical recruiting period. The situation escalated dramatically just hours after the announcement.
Local police detained Moore later that same afternoon. The 39-year-old coach was in his second season leading the program. He took over as head coach in 2024 after serving as a successful assistant since 2018. Moore led the team to a 9-3 regular-season record in 2025. He had positioned Michigan as a contender in the Big Ten conference.
The university conducted an internal investigation. It uncovered “credible evidence” of conduct violating institutional policy. Athletic Director Warde Manuel issued an official statement confirming the termination. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy,” Manuel stated. He emphasised the university maintains “zero tolerance for such behaviour.”

The Saline Police Department assisted in locating Moore. He was detained in Saline, Michigan, a small town near Ann Arbor. Officers then turned him over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. That department is investigating “potential charges.” Early reports clarified this was a detention, not a formal arrest.
Unsubstantiated rumours have circulated on social media. No official source has confirmed these claims. Michigan moved swiftly to name an interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Biff Poggi will lead the program on an interim basis. This aims to maintain stability during the vital recruiting season.

The program is still recovering from a prior sign-stealing scandal. Moore served a one-game suspension in that 2023 incident. Michigan now faces another severe leadership crisis. This timing is terrible for retaining committed recruits and hiring a permanent replacement.
