Former Punjab Governor and PTI National Assembly member Mian Muhammad Azhar passed away in Lahore on July 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was the father of PTI leader Hammad Azhar and a seasoned politician who served as the federal Minister of Commerce during the 1990s.
Mian Muhammad Azhar, a prominent political figure, served as the founding president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and later joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in October 2011, marking a significant shift in his political affiliations.

In the February 2024 general elections, he contested NA-129 (Lahore-XIII) as a PTI-backed candidate and subsequently joined the Sunni Ittehad Council. Ahead of the polls, authorities detained him in January 2024 during a widespread police crackdown on PTI-affiliated candidates and supporters who rallied in response to party founder Imran Khan’s call. He was released a few hours later.

Unofficial results revealed that Mian Azhar received 103,718 votes, while his main opponent, Hafiz Nauman, secured 71,540 votes—a clear margin of victory for Azhar. For context, in the 2018 general elections, Hammad Azhar won the same seat with 105,734 votes, reflecting the constituency’s ongoing support for the Azhar family and PTI
