In game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, Miami Heat claimed victory over the Celtics with a 103-84 win, led by Jimmy Butler’s exceptional performance of 28 points and Caleb Martin’s double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds.
The victory impeded the Celtics’ attempt at a historic comeback after the Heat had initially lost a 3-0 lead in the series.
Advancing to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons, the Heat is set to compete against the Western Conference champion Nuggets, with the series’ first game scheduled in Denver on Thursday night.
Miami’s Bam Adebayo contributed a noteworthy 12 points along with 10 rebounds. The team stands out as the first No. 8 seed to compete for a championship since the 1999 New York Knicks. The Nuggets, the top-seeded team, have been in standby mode since their sweep against the Los Angeles Lakers on May 22.
With his remarkable performance throughout the series, Jimmy Butler has been crowned the Most Valuable Player of the Eastern Conference finals, an award named after Celtics’ Hall of Famer Larry Bird.
Boston’s Derrick White, who played a crucial role in Game 6, added 18 points for the team, with Jaylen Brown securing 19 points and eight rebounds. Despite their efforts, the team struggled from the three-point range, with Brown only managing 1 out of 9 attempts.
Jayson Tatum, who had previously set a record with 51 points in Game 7 against Philadelphia in the conference semi-finals, had a challenging night with 14 points and 11 rebounds after an early ankle injury.
The Celtics managed to lead the game initially but ended the first quarter behind due to the Heat’s 14-4 run. Miami also secured 16 of the first 22 points in the second quarter.
Despite Boston narrowing the lead to seven points towards the end of the third, Miami was able to pull away in the fourth, leading 76-66 at the break and scoring the first seven points of the final quarter.
The Heat won the series’ first three games, placing them within reach of the NBA Finals. Historically, none of the 150 teams that gained a 3-0 lead in an NBA playoff series has ever failed to progress.
The Celtics, drawing inspiration from a documentary about the Boston Red Sox’s 2004 World Series comeback from a 3-0 deficit against the New York Yankees, couldn’t replicate the feat. Despite winning Games 4 and 5 and leading in Game 6, Miami managed to bounce back and clinch the series, denying the Celtics their hoped-for comeback.
