On July 1, 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a new AI division aimed at advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI). Led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, MSL merges Meta’s Llama and FAIR teams to drive next-generation AI models.
Zuckerberg revealed MSL in an internal memo, outlining its mission to position Meta as a leader in AGI development. The unit combines Meta’s Llama model team, used by over a billion people monthly, and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division. A new lab will focus on cutting-edge models, with Wang serving as Chief AI Officer and Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, overseeing product and applied research. Daniel Gross, formerly of Safe Superintelligence, joins the effort.
