The unit combines Meta’s Llama model team, used by over a billion people monthly, and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division. A new lab will focus on cutting-edge models, with Wang serving as Chief AI Officer and Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, overseeing product and applied research. Daniel Gross, formerly of Safe Superintelligence, joins the effort.

MSL will advance Llama 4.1 and 4.2, already integrated across Meta platforms, while developing frontier models. The shift from consumer AI assistants to foundational infrastructure underscores Meta’s ambition to lead in AGI, aiming for “personal superintelligence for everyone.”
