‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’ Theme and Dress Code
The 2025 theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores Black dandyism’s role in shaping Black identities over three centuries. The exhibition, open to the public from May 10 to October 26, 2025, features garments, photographs, and artefacts from figures like Frederick Douglass and André Leon Talley, organised into 12 sections like “Ownership” and “Cool.” It’s the Costume Institute’s first menswear-focused show since 2003’s “Men in Skirts.”

The dress code, “Tailored for You,” invites creative takes on menswear, from 1940s zoot suits to vibrant Congolese sapeur styles. It emphasises tailored staples like hats, canes, and pocket squares. Expect stars to blend historical and modern Black fashion influences, with potential nods to designers like Patrick Kelly or Dapper Dan.
Co-Chairs and Expected Guests
Co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James as honorary chair (unable to attend due to a knee injury), the gala features a host committee including André 3000, Janelle Monáe, Usher, and Simone Biles. The guest list, kept secret until arrivals, typically includes Met Gala regulars like Rihanna, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, and the Kardashian-Jenners. Rumoured attendees include Shakira, Lizzo, and Blackpink’s Rosé and Lisa, with Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist, partnering with Burberry.
