The Dallas Mavericks secured the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery on May 12, 2025, defying 1.8% odds to claim their first top selection since 1981, as announced during the event represented by franchise legend Rolando Blackman.

With Duke’s Cooper Flagg, a generational talent, as the projected top pick, the Mavericks face a pivotal decision: draft Flagg to rebuild or trade the pick for an established star, reshaping their future after a playoff-missing season.

NBA Draft 2025 Lottery Win

With the 11th-best odds, the Mavericks stunned the basketball world by jumping to the No. 1 pick, their second-ever top selection in 18 lottery appearances. The win offers relief for the president of basketball operations, Nico Harrison, who navigated a turbulent season marked by injuries and the blockbuster trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis. X posts from fans erupted with excitement, hailing the chance to draft Flagg or leverage the pick for a title push.

Cooper Flagg’s Potential

Flagg, an 18-year-old Duke freshman, is the consensus top talent. His two-way brilliance and clutch performance make him a potential franchise cornerstone. His freshman stats, averaging 16.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game, drew NBA scout praise, positioning him as a long-term investment for Dallas. However, with salary cap constraints and a thin roster, Harrison might trade the pick for a star to complement Davis, aligning with the team’s “win-now” strategy.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 25, 2025, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and it will highlight the Dallas Mavericks’ upcoming decision. Retaining Flagg could help rejuvenate the Mavericks’ youth pipeline, while a trade could hasten their pursuit of a championship. Given the setbacks from last season, this decision places significant pressure on Harrison to balance immediate needs with future potential, as acquiring a veteran star might better align with Dallas’ goals.
