The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless struggle to restore democracy and uphold human rights. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, committee chair, praised her “courageous efforts against authoritarian rule” despite severe repression and personal risks.

Born October 7, 1967, Machado, an industrial engineer, has been a pivotal figure in Venezuela’s opposition. She founded Súmate, a vote-monitoring group, in 2002 and served in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2014. As National Coordinator of Vente Venezuela, she champions “popular capitalism” and the privatisation of state entities like PDVSA. Listed in BBC’s 100 Women (2018) and Time’s 100 Most Influential (2025), she’s a global icon.

In 2023, Machado ran in opposition presidential primaries but was barred by the Maduro regime. She then backed Edmundo González, who competed as the main opposition candidate. Her advocacy for international sanctions and foreign intervention to oust Maduro has sparked debate within the opposition.

In 2024, Machado and González received the European Union’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, honouring their fight for Venezuela’s freedom. Despite her influence, Maduro’s government banned her from leaving the country, intensifying her struggle.
