President Arif Alvi has appointed Mansoor Usman Awan as the new Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) after accepting the resignation of Barrister Shehzad Ata Elahi, who had only been in the position for less than two months.
The president approved the appointment under Article 100 of the Constitution, and Awan’s status will be equal to a federal minister.
Barrister Elahi was selected for the AGP post after Awan declined last year’s appointment. Despite the president’s approval, Awan was not officially notified, and the government faced criticism from the judiciary for not filling the important constitutional position.
Mansoor Usman Awan holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Punjab, where he stood first. He was awarded the Justice M Jan Memorial gold medal for obtaining first position in jurisprudence and the Charles Earl Bevan Petman Law Prize for first position in criminal law. Awan also received the Harvard Law School Dean’s Award for Leadership (2005) and served as the LLM Representative to the Harvard Law School Council and vice president of the Harvard Graduate Council.
The appointment of Mansoor Usman Awan as the new Attorney General for Pakistan is expected to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position
