Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah disclosed that former spy chief Lt. Gen. (retd.) Faiz Hamid is under investigation for alleged corruption.
Pakistan Muslim League (PML) leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif demanded that the retired general be tried in court for his alleged role in toppling her father’s government and implicating her and Nawaz Sharif in NAB cases.
In the meantime, Gen. Hamid appeared to break his silence on the most recent allegations made against him by the PML-N and Ms. Sharif when he told a journalist that the army chief makes the decisions in the military.
The interior minister announced at a Wednesday press conference that the former head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and his brother are being investigated for alleged corruption and amassing assets beyond their means. However, he clarified that, at this time, further commentary would be premature.
When it was pointed out that any inquiry into assets beyond means would fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Investigation Agency, the law minister responded that an investigation was already underway (FIA).
He assured the questioner, “You will be notified if anything comes to light.
In an interview with a newly established digital news outlet, Ms. Sharif demanded stern action against the former ISI DG for getting her and her father found guilty in NAB corruption cases in 2017.
In contrast to her archrival Imran Khan, who is demanding the court martial of the former army chief, Ms. Sharif refrained from requesting severe punitive action against retired Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, stating that she only wanted Gen. Hamid to be the focus at this time.
“When Gen. Hamid was in charge of the ISI, I testified against him in court for his alleged role in getting Nawaz Sharif and be punished. She stated, “I had evidence against him” about claims made by former Islamabad High Court judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui that the spy agency attempted to influence him to render a decision in their favor.
Later, senior journalist Kamran Khan claimed in a tweet that the former ISI director had contacted him and provided a response to Ms. Sharif’s allegations.
